How to Create A Plan B for SEO Rankings

Does your website have a plan B for SEO rankings? Specifically, does each landing page and its corresponding keywords have a best case alternative or worst case alternative in the event that (a) a page loses relevance (b) incurs a penalty (c) the supporting on page and off page algorithms or ranking factors change or (d) you simply need more diversity for relevance?

If not, then there is no better time than the present to implement peace of mind and build your arsenal of on page and off page relevance to weather the storm, if and when search engine algorithms change.

They always say better safe than sorry instead of better late than never, and considering how link flow pools in a site, you can either impede a website from not creating enough outlets (landing pages) for it to vent its pure ranking potential.

Just like the distinction between kinetic and potential energy, kinetic energy is raw, abrasive, dense and tangible while potential energy exists, but in rarefied form; similarly, link flow within a website can exhibit the similar characteristics.

With a vast variety of things that could impact search engine algorithms, planting the seeds of an alternative SEO successor page (a.k.a Plan B) for your main keywords isn’t that far-fetched.

The Plan B SEO Method is Simple:

Check the content saturation ratio of your page / keyword within your website.

1. Use this Google search operator in a search query box to inquire how many pages you have in the index.

site:yoursite.com

It will show results 1 – 10 of X amount of pages indexed.

2. Then, add the keyword after it to determine how many occurrences you have to “support” your global term weight of the keyword within the site.

site:yoursite.com keyword

3. From there, observe the order of the sequence and Google is letting you know which pages it sees as the most significant for that specific keyword. They are listed in order of chronological significance.

Next,

4. Simply link all of the top 20 prominent pages (if you have that many for that keyword) to the preferred landing page, preferably using that keyword as anchor text (since you know it exists on the page) from being visible as relevant to the query.

5. After you link all of the subordinate pages to the preferred landing page, then cap the outbound links from the preferred landing page to minimize diffusion.

6. Elect a successor by linking from the preferred landing page to the secondary page, preferably high up in the document body copy.  By linking from the main landing page to the next best landing page / successor with the same anchor text, then you are delegating the keyword / position to default to the second page (the page you link to from the preferred landing page with the preferred keyword).

Considering it hedging your website; if one page falls out of favor, the other can step up and take its place. The way to promote pages in the hierarchy is to increase the deep link percentage.

So, if you have 20 relevant pages of content on a topic and they are all linked to a preferred page (but not reciprocating from the preferred landing page); and that preferred page does not have inbound links from other sites, you can augment the supporting pages with deep links or build links to individual pages in the daisy chain to elevate the entire semantic theme and keyword cluster.

By building links to your links you strengthen the link profile but do so without crossing into a disproportionate link velocity (the rate in which you build or lose links).

So, rely on your own sites internal links first, find the occurrences using the site: command, then augment the entire keyword cluster / landing page chain with deep links to create a hierarchy of pages to provide SEO defense as well as mount a strong offensive for a competitive keyword push.
